Thousands of years ago in ancient India that the rishis (seers) sought to comprehend the puzzle of existence: the nature of the Reality that underlies the physical universe. They did not possess the tools of modern science, but managed to penetrate to religious realms outside matter by fine-tuning the tool of the mind. They developed practices that enabled them to remove the distraction of bodily senses and wandering thoughts, concentrate the mind steadily on a single thing, and emotionally unite with it.

Source of energy

This way, they could perceive light and life energy (life force) permeating the physical world, as well as the Source of the energy and light: the vibratory power, white light, and loving intelligence of Spirit. These practices and their ultimate goal, union with Spirit, are known as “Yoga” (from the Sanskrit word “yuj,” “to combine”). As a system of clinics, yoga involves techniques for relaxing the body, withdrawing the mind from senses, and experiencing realities beyond the range of the bodily senses. Yoga sutras

In Yoga Sutras, a profound exposition of the science of yoga, Patanjali wrote that the next eight limbs (branches or elements ) of yoga allow one to control the modifications of the brain. Through steadfast practice of those limbs, one can go beyond sensations, ideas and emotions; dormant faculties of the soul are triggered; and one begins to experience eternal realities. Ultimately, one becomes fully conscious of the true nature as the Self (the nature of the soul) and Spirit. These eight aspects of yoga are often known as the “Eightfold Path of Yoga” They free one from the root of earthly suffering and cause enlightenment-blissful awareness of and union with one’s higher, immortal Spirit and nature.

The eight limbs purify the mind and expand consciousness. Although the seventh limb, dhyana, is translated “meditation,” for many people “meditation” only means quieting your mind and focusing on a religious thought or perception. The asanas (poses or postures ) of hatha yoga (the path of physical, psychological and spiritual well-being made possible by physical area ) stretch and relax muscles and nerves, reduce tensions, and enhance health. A hurried lifestyle where one action crowds in upon another also agitates the brain, inducing us to act automatically, like robots, controlled by outside conditions and restless habits of action and thought. By comparison, if we set aside time every day to enjoy the beauty in nature and browse devotional writings, or listen to uplifting music and sing devotional songs, we become more peaceful and loving. Such actions prepare the way for us to still the mind and awaken the heart. The ego is our lower nature. It’s temporary and finite, like a graft on the spirit, which in nature is ideal and immortal. As the ego, we identify with our physical body and therefore are oblivious of our indestructible infinitude.

We put on the constraints of the human body, due to our identification with it, and suffer with pain, anger and stress as a result of actual or possible accidents, diseases, and poverty. Sometimes, through identification with the body, we become moody or joyful. Our attachment to the body and other possessions makes us fear their loss. Meditation frees us from spiritual ignorance and consequent suffering by imitating our omnipresent consciousness as the royal soul.

Meditation benefits

By practicing meditation, we start to perceive our oneness with the hearts and minds of all. The grip of the self is loosened, and the inherent wisdom and love of the soul start to manifest.

  • Sit with spine erect, holding body, neck, and head motionless.
  • Breathe slowly, relax and observe the flow of breath.
  • With the eyes half opened, lift them gently and focus on the forehead just above the point between the eyebrows.
  • Refuse to consider worries, anxieties, needs, and problems. While celebrating the inflow and outflow of the breath, mentally repeat, over and above, a sacred word, phrase, sentence, or chant, or concentrate on a religious idea, image or perception.

Do this

For instance, in cadence with the breath, repeat the title of a sacred being. Breathe slowly, and refocus the mind whenever it stinks. Sit up straight, with the chin level, the shoulders back, and the torso outside; seated on the floor with legs crossed, or onto a straight-back (armless) seat. This blissful state of consciousness is called Self-realization, and those who reach it are thought to be completely enlightened or Self-realized. From the start, one becomes happier and more effective because meditation develops mental calmness, concentration, intuition, compassion, mental performance, self-control, constructive attitudes, freedom from tension and internal conflicts, and physical and psychological well-being. Subconscious perceptions don’t transcend earthly experience.

They happen as regular dreams or as hypnotically-induced recall of past events. By deep concentration, an enlightened yogi can adjust the radio for their head to tune out the static of distracting thoughts and sensations and get the thoughts of someone else so as to be of support to them. All thoughts exist as subtle vibrations in the ethers and influence the consciousness of humankind. Thoughts that are loving and pure are of great benefit for everybody. By making one more conscious of their soul and its omnipresent, eternal nature, meditation helps you to overcome loneliness, guilt, anxiety, and a bad self-image.

The soul, in its essence, is ideal, and as our comprehension of its all-satisfying, boundless love and bliss raises, we locate an ideal, unfading love and joy that we seek in human affection. Pure, unconditional love is what we are and always will be, though earthly illusions may veil our comprehension of it. Love makes it possible for us to forgive ourselves and others. It’s an uplifting, changing power that brings goodness and brings harmony and peace. It infuses relationships between friends, relatives and couples with purity, selflessness, and joy. When we taste the all-satisfying sweetness of the soul, which is eternal, we no longer walk in fear and dread on the pathway of life, for we all know that, no matter what occurs, the realm of love and joy is within us. And if our loved ones are removed, we all know that, in another way, we’ll find fulfillment.


A yogi contacts the all-accomplishing power of the soul, and understands that as the ideal soul unfolds its true nature all human imperfections will be overcome. By realizing the greatness of your soul-its innate innocence, love, and oneness with the rest of the souls-feelings of unworthiness, guilt, or lack slowly melt away. For food to be used by the body, it has to be digested (broken down into easily absorbed substances), and such substances, together with life energies in the meals, absorbed into the blood stream and the cells, organs and tissues.

Each cell is a living thing, nourished not only by the energies and substances from the food we consume, but by energies provided by us as connections between the ethereal realm of thought, energy, and love and the material world of materials. Our health, which can be set by the energy of our cells, organs and cells, is dependent upon the flow of energy to the body from our understanding functioning through the mind, in addition to energies and substances from the food we consume. Positive thoughts of good health and prosperity flood the body with energy and light so that it works more effectively, with better health and less fatigue.

Negative ideas

These interrupt the functions of its cells, tissues and organs, and weaken their resistance to dangerous microbes and infectious agents. Therefore, our thoughts influence the body in a very substantial way. The events in our life are shaped by the ideas we habitually think. If we harbor thoughts of ill will or collapse, these ideas have the ability to pull negative consequences in our life. Ill will magnetically attracts ill will from others, and negative ideas block the ability of good thoughts to entice real friends and achievement.

The more we infuse our minds with ideas of abundance, excellent health, and friendship, the better our lives will become. Hold each posture for any period of time feels right. Try to be guided intuitively on your practice. Remember to inhale when bending backward and to exhale while bending forward. Always concentrate on what you are feeling as you perform each position. The seated poses and neck exercises could be practiced after ingestion. The plow pose limbers the upper area of the spine and relieves tension in the shoulders and neck. During pregnancy or if a person has high blood pressure (hypertension) the upside-down postures (reverse present, shoulderstand, plow) ought to be avoided or held just for a brief time period.

Backward-bending poses
